The Hide House

West Norwood / London

Completed 2021
Project duration 24 months

The owners of this large semi-detached late Victorian house in West Norwood, were looking refurbish the existing living, kitchen and dining spaces creating a stronger relationship with the garden.

Colour and spice and all things nice.

The family’s moodboard presented dream spaces with colour and pattern, playful spaces with rich character.  The extension created two contrasting family focused spaces at the back of the house.   One is the kitchen, which has a strong connection to the garden, and the second is a sweet reading and play space with its own identity.

We wanted to frame the view of an old Acer tree in the garden from the moment you walk through the door.   The round window centres on this tree and creates a look out across the garden.

The family loved pattern, colour and ceramics which can be seen across the spaces, with colour soaked into the external building fabric.

Project Summary

FRAHER Build + Joinery

This was our third project to deliver with our in house construction team. It was also the project that founded FRAHER Joinery - we made the bookshelves to the snug spaces.

Glazed bricks

We love a window that is unique. A circular window conjures up feelings of travelling (boat porthole windows) and introduces a unique identity to a room. The internal window ledge is deep enough for a child’ bottom to sit on.

Circular Window

We played around with a number of ways to introduce colour to the back of the house. Glazed bricks have been used for hundreds of years in construction. The glossy finish reflects light within the garden.
